Getting Started with Vestigo Labels

Dispense Label generation is one of the core functions of Vestigo. Let's take a look at how Vestigo functions with printers and labels.

Types of Labels

There are several different types of labels that Vestigo can generate if your site chooses to use them.

1. Dispense - Prints during dispensation
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
2. Prescription - Prints during dispensation
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
3. Bag - Prints during dispensation
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
4. Chain of Custody - Prints during dispensation. Most sites implement this label into the bag or prescription label
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
5. Patient - Prints during participant enrollment
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
6. Returns - Prints during any transaction that sends inventory to quarantine or returns
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
7. Patient Send Out - Prints when recording a patient send out on the protocol
   1. Defaults to the Default Label Printer of the facility.
8. Inventory - Prints from the View/Edit Inventory screen
   1. Defaults to the Default Inventory Label Printer of the facility.
9. Pick/Stock - Prints during any receive or adjust inventory transaction 
   1. Defaults to the Default Inventory Label Printer of the facility.

Printer Considerations

Vestigo works best when using dedicated label printers. These printers generally print labels that can be continuous/non-continuous, thermal/non-thermal, and can generate a label size around 2x4" (HxW). The label size can vary depending on what the site use's and we design the template around their preferred label size.

While it is possible to configure a desktop laser printer for Vestigo labels, McCreadie Group does not recommend this pathway.

Sharing a printer with another Software or Service

Your site may opt to share a printer that is also utilized by another software or service. However, in some cases, another vendor may send command codes to the printer during printer that adjusts the printer settings. In those cases, Vestigo will require a dedicated label printer to ensure label generation meets site's requirements 100% of the time.

Label Stock Considerations

One thing to consider when using Vestigo labels is the label stock. This is an important consideration as sites have the ability to customize the labels and even label stock size based on the type of labels. 

Sites can choose to have all their label types as the same size, eg 2x4 (HxW). By default, these are the default label templates that are provided to each new Vestigo client. However, sites can choose to have different sizes based on facilities, or label types

Let's look at a few examples:

• The IDS Pharmacy facility is using the same label stock for their single printer. They utilize a 2x4 label set for all of their label types and have the default printers pointed to the IDS Printer.

  • Requirements: 1 printer
• The Cancer Center (CC) Pharmacy is using a label stock of 2x4 for their dispensing labels, but they also want to use a smaller label stock for inventory transactions such as 1x2. The CC can use the same 2x4 label templates as the IDS pharmacy, but the Cancer Center facility would be set to use the 1x2 labels for transactions. The Cancer Center Facility default printer would be pointed at the printer named CC_Dispense, but the default inventory printer would be pointed at CC_Inventory.
  • Requirements: 2 printers

Label Templates

Vestigo Label templates at your site are created for a specific label size.

For example, if your dispensing labels use a 2x4" template and you print them on a printer loaded with 1x2" inventory labels, key information will be missing. If all your labels are the same size and stock, this won’t be an issue.

Each Vestigo facility can have their own unique label template, but they can only have one active template per label type at a time. This setting cannot be changed by the site directly—a support request is required to update or switch templates.

However, the site can have multiple Dispense label templates available for use as those are selected at the order build level. 

Your site may choose to have a different dispense label template for Inpatient or Outpatient that contain different information, and then you would just select the appropriate label at the order build.

If a dispense is processed using the wrong label template, that template will continue to be used for printing on any reprints of the label. To correct this, you’ll need to void the prescription, update the default label for the order, and then re-process the dispense using the correct template.

Facility Defaults

There are two types of defaults for each facility: Label and Inventory Printers. This is important to remember as this means you can have different label sizes for dispensing and any inventory labels that the site generates. 

If you need to send the label to a different printer with the same label stock, you can select the printer during the transaction.

Default Label Quantities

You can also set the default number of labels that are populated during the transaction. This can always be adjusted during the transaction.

So, if the default is 1, but you need 2 when you are performing a transaction, you can update the quantity field. You can always reprint the labels as well.

Default Dispensing Label

You can set the default dispensing label when creating a new order within a facility.
This is especially helpful for IDS sites that use different label sizes across multiple locations, ensuring the correct template is applied automatically during order creation.

This can be adjusted as needed, but it does not change any order already created. It will only default on new orders going forward.
